Why is men wearing women’s clothes a taboo subject?
Question by dan: Why is men wearing women’s clothes a taboo subject?
I read statistics that as many as 30% of men (about 1 out of 3) have worn some form of female clothing at some point. 5-10% do so frequently.
Women also cross-dress frequently, even sometimes making it a fashion trend, wearing neckties, bow ties, men’s shirts, men’s pants, even men’s underwear. If it is OK for a woman to wear man’s clothes, why is it so wrong a man wears something a woman usually wears?

95% of cross dressers are heterosexual and psychologically normal.
And did you also know the average cross dresser has above average intelligence? Cross dressers (on average) score higher on IQ tests than people who have never cross-dressed.
Cross dressers also tend to have a high level of curiosity and creativity. These are traits of intelligence.
The reason society rejects cross dressing (especially for men) is do to the pressure to conform to stereotypical gender roles. Even in 2009, society tries to maintain two different roles…one for men and one for women. Crossing this boundary is considered wrong. And those that dare cross it will be ridiculed and shunned by the society in order to maintain the staus quo.
It shows that civilization has a long way to go….And it shows that we are certainly not all equal yet.

Well this is just my opinion but men are supposed to Masculine. I mean no one likes to think of a guy walking around in lip gloss and pumps do they? I don’t think that women should “cross-dress” either. Most of the time i see women wearing neck ties are when their of a girlish print. Not of something a guy would wear. I guess it’s just plain annoying to be in a public place and see someone dressed like a girl and have to question their sex.

I agree with the first answer. It has to do with stereotypes and gender roles.
Did you know that MEN originally invented and wore high heel shoes? Back in the 1600s it was the elites and wealthy men that wore high heel shoes as a fashion. This was a big hit in France at the time. It went out of style until women eventually picked it up.
It is society that determines these things.
