   The main thing they get is placing their ads on every web page that is hosted free with them (income). Also they get a ton of traffic to their main domain name which is one of the main things if they are looking to sell the site in future. E-mail address of all the users, some of these will sell the e-mail addresses to list providers. In addition to the above mentioned items they will also try to upgrade the accounts to paid hosting which will result in residual income.
