Check the wrapper on your yarn to see what brand it is. Most yarn brands have free patterns available for all skill levels. You can check out the Lion Brand yarn website, or the Red Heart Yarn one, if your yarn has no wrapper.
Failing that, go to Google or Dogpile and type in something like “crochet pattern beginner baby blanket free” when the box comes up.

I know nobody likes to do this anymore but you should check out your local library in the craft section. look for a ripple pattern afghan .it looks hard because it is so pretty but it is all single crochet. you can vary the look by using different colours or even better, varigated yarn. you can check out the patterns and scan or copy which one you want to crochet. this pattern is addictive!

This is a pattern I’ve been using. It is very simple. I do it while walking on the tread mill at my gym. I’ve made several of these, and actually sold a couple online. It uses bulky weight yarn and a 6.5 hook. I use Redheart Baby Clouds.
Chain 88.
Row 1 Double crochet, chain1, double crochet all in 5th chain from hook {skip 2 chain, work vstitch in next ch} across to last 2 chain, skip 1 chain, double crochet in last chain.
Row 2 Chain 3, turn. Work vstitch in each chain 1 space across, end double crochet in top of turning chain.
Repeat row 2 until blanket is as long as you want.
A vstitch is worked double crochet, chain 1, double crochet all in one stitch.
